I woke up this morning feeling sad yet had no reason I could think of to feel so down.
Even after taking a yoga class to clear my head, I was left feeling even worse. I realized that sometimes emotions just run through us that have nothing to do with “today”.
For me; I tapped into an old belief I’d been carrying around that no longer served me. I was triggered by something recent and it reopened an old sadness that was long past but obviously not forgotten.
What to do?
When you feel an emotion and you can’t put your finger on why it’s suddenly there; ask yourself what this reminds you of from your past. Keep going back farther and farther in time until you track it to childhood. Right there is the original wound as well as the key to move through it. Let the sensations run through your body and watch the scene unfold in your head. Rewrite the scene as though your adult self was there the entire time. Now imagine your adult self walking into that scene, saying what needed to be said and then take your child self by the hand and walk out.
Shining a light on the original wound brings healing to that dark place inside of us that believe it or not, still runs our emotional state. Now in your imagination ask that child self what they want or need right now in this moment. You may be surprised, it’s often something you can provide easily. Don’t question, trust what comes and if you find yourself sheepishly buying a stuffed animal as an adult; know that you’re healing an old wound that will no longer run you unconsciously.
The more we heal our past, the less it bleeds into our future.
