We’ve all done it…
We’ve walked into a room after two people have been arguing and although they put on happy faces and assured you everything was okay, you could still feel the tension right?
Maybe a friend is going through a hard time and when you enter their home, you can feel the heaviness and the sadness.
One of my favorite ways to clear space, energy, emotions and basically hit the reset button is to burn sage. Smudge sticks as they are called, have been a tradition in many cultures. Sage actually purifies the air and removes stagnant odors.
Fight with your spouse or children? Once it’s over, burn some sage. Consider making it a sweet family ritual of hitting the reset button as if to say, “we’ve moved on.”
There are many types of sage, yet the two most popular kinds to burn are California white sage and something called mugwort which is actually in the Artemisia family. Mug wort is what acupuncturists use on meridian points of the body to either clear blockages, or call in more energy to heal the point. Both smell wonderful and both have the same function; to clear your space and your body.
How to burn? Simply find a fireproof plate or bowl. Native Americans traditionally used shells to represent the four elements. Air/smoke, Fire, Earth/sage, and Water/shell
Light the sage until it flames then after a second or two, blow out the flame so it smokes. Open a window or door so the smoke can escape and walk around each room of your home, openings doors and cabinets as you go and “smudge” your space. End with smudging yourself by starting at your feet, moving up and around yourself and ending at the top of your head. This is also a lovely thing to do with your partner since you can take turns smudging one another.
Sound woo woo to you? Try it sometime. Smudge sticks are inexpensive and if you don’t like the smell, you can toss it. I’ll talk about other ways to clear your space another time.
